Bassoonist Andrea Bressan (Principal; Budapest Festival Orchestra) and violinist Giovanni Guzzo (Concertmaster; Camerata Salzburg & Guest Concertmaster; London Symphony Orchestra) have teamed up to record new – or never played – repertoire for bassoon and violin.
They are joined on the album by Gabrielle Shek on violin, Dana Zemtsov on viola and Pau Codina on Cello. This is Dana Zemtsov’s 6th Stereo and 5 Channel Surround Sound DSD release at NativeDSD Music.
Great friends and highly respected musicians, Andrea Bressan and Giovanni Guzzo play works from a specific geographical area and a specific historical period. Composers Niccolò Paganini and Alessandro Rolla were also good friends and played concerts as a Violino and Viola duo.
There are only two recordings of the Tre Duetti Concertanti per violino e fagotto by Paganini, while Rolla’s Concertino a tre was never even recorded before! The idea behind including short pieces from Paganini’s Divertimenti Carnevaleschi is to alternate emotional moments and keep listeners active and involved throughout.
Reflecting on playing Italian repertoire, Andrea Bressan tells us: “In many bars and moments of these compositions I found the sounds, the smells and the beautiful light of my country and of my sunny youth.”

Part of the joy of this programme is the infectious nature of the playing. Distinguished players Andrea Bressan and Giovanni Guzzo are great friends, as were composers Niccolò Paganini and Alessandro Rolla, who performed together as a violin and viola duo, the former apparently having had left-hand pizzicato technique introduced to him by the latter.

I admit to being drawn to chamber music. I love the intimacy and the close interplay of musicians attuned to each other and playing with a collegial exchange of ideas. A well performed chamber recital is simply a delight. And this is certainly such a recital. (…) These are performances of gentle works that explore the art of the possible and the artful mastering of the impossible. Such is most particularly true of their performance of Allesandro Rolla’s (1757 – 1841) Tre Duetti Concertanti per violino e fagotto, which is well worth the cost of the album all on its own. The Paganini Duettos 1, 2, and 3, which take up most of the album are all pleasurable but my greater enjoyment came from the interlude works separating the three Duettos, particularly the Divertimenti Carnevalschi per due violini e basso of track 8.

A fun recording to be sure. Sonically the album gives no reason to complain.
Each time I listen the program seems to end more quickly than the last. Making me want at least one more track.
Hearing the pads on the oboe makes the performance very personal.
