La Notte (The Night) features just a trumpet, a guitar and a bass. The absence of the battery immediately brings to mind the late Chet Baker, a chamber size, intimate and sensual. The music was “photographed” in the wonderful acoustics of the theater “Persius Flaccus” of Volterra, waiting for the bells of the five ceased, or that the thunder of a storm at the end of summer subsides.

A choice that has put the musicians in direct relation to their essence simple, highlighting the strength and fragility. This recording technique has opened up a window to the future, we returned back decades, as often happens when you looking for something and find it necessary to look to the past.

The result manages to combine a highly accurate and natural sound with human presence, lively and vivid musicians. The impression is that you can expand with a magnifying glass the sound image to infinity, discovering each time new details that are always in focus.

HRAudio.net 5 out of 5

The Bill Evans jazz standard “Turn out the Stars” offers all three players a solid foundation for (identifiably) jazz soloing. The set concludes, aptly, with the Cole Porter song “All Through the Night”. The trio takes the tune at mid-tempo, driven by Pietropaoli’s propulsive bass playing.

La Notte was engineered, recorded and mastered by Fonè Records label owner Giulio Cesare Ricci with his classic Neumann microphone kit direct to DSD. The historic site of the Teatro Persio Flacco provides a warm ambience. Signor Ricci’s careful placement of microphones generates an astonishingly realistic stereo soundstage. On some of the tunes, guitarist Lena vocalizes very softly (and in tune). The first time I played the recording fairly loud, I thought one of my neighbors was singing along…

La notte – Pietropaoli, Lena, Sigurtà 5 out of 5

Wonderful album, state of the art recording by Giulio Cesare Ricci (fonè).

1 review for La Notte (The Night)

Very nice recording;. You sink into the room where it was recorded and wish you could have been a part of the session.

But there is one issue. Sometimes the trumpet position in the soundstage moves because other mics pick it up as its volume increases. This can be quite annoying, but the recording as a whole is too good to ignore.

I highly recommend even with this slight booboo.
