The 2L Immersive Channel Identification 7.1.4 Test Files identify the channels in a 7.1.4 Channel Dolby Atmos TrueHD, Auro3D and DTS:X Immersive Audio MKV playback system. It is available at NativeDSD for $4.99.

The voice guides you quickly around the sphere. Then each channel play a range of sinus tones to verify level and bandwidth of reproduction. These test tones also serve to check transparency and properties of the codecs, including fold-down and headphone virtualization.

The tones start at 30Hz and ascend in octaves: 30 – 60 – 120 – 240 – 480 – 960 – 1.920 – 3.840 – 7.680 – 15.360

He’s supported on the album by an array of Latin jazz all-stars. Including Saxophonist and Clarinetist Paquito D’ Rivera and the late trombonist Juan Pablo Torres. The first disc is an eight-suite big band opus entitled Suite Cubana. “Cachao, Creator del Mambo,” pays tribute to the influential bassist, while the processional pulsations on “Nocturno en Batanga,” features the engaging rhythm Valdes created in the ’50s.

On the album Sweet Caress, Flugelhorn player Franco Ambrosetti is joined by Alan Broadbent, John Scofield, Peter Erskine, Scott Colley and Sara Caswell as they perform a host of Jazz ballads.

This is the album’s debut in Stereo and 5.1 Channel Surround Sound DSD 256, DSD 128, DSD 64 and DXD, Stereo DSD 512, and 7.1.4 Channel Auro3D and Dolby Atmos TrueHD MKV Immersive Surround Sound at NativeDSD!

With arrangements by pianist Alan Broadbent, the sublime ballads album finds the Swiss trumpet legend and his Jazz ensemble addressing such Jazz classics as Mal Waldron’s “Soul Eyes,” Charlie Haden’s “Nightfall,” Les Alrich’s melodic and mellow “Old Friends”.

The album also features J. Russel Robinson’s “Portrait of Jennie,” a tune originally written for a 1948 movie of the same name and which became a hit song later that year for Nat King Cole before being covered by J.J. Johnson, George Shearing, Blue Mitchell, Red Garland, Oscar Peterson and Wes Montgomery. It was even included on Clifford Brown with Strings, the 1955 album that ignited Ambrosetti’s youthful ambition to pursue Jazz.

MOR (Mother) is a word that evokes associations, memories and emotions. Which mother do you think of? A loving mother with a newborn baby in her arms. Intimacy. A despairing mother in deep grief over a lost life. Emptiness. Through words and music our lives are woven together with Mary’s life and perhaps we sense that a mother’s pain and sorrow, a mother’s strength and endurance, a mother’s warmth and love are the same now as they were two thousand years ago.

Patricia Barber’s Modern Cool was the recording that made Barber an International Jazz Star with a classic version of Light My Fire, first made famous by The Doors.

On the initial tour for this album, Barber played a four night stand at The Jazz Standard in New York where she was heard by Bruce Lundvall of Blue Note Records. This led to a string of Barber recordings for both Premonition and Blue Note, worldwide touring and unapologetic critical acclaim from which Barber never looked back.

Audiophiles were well aware of Barber from her 1994 Premonition recording Cafe Blue. Sonically, Modern Cool copied the Cafe Blue playbook: same recording studio, engineer, and recording approach. Musically, Barber added trumpeter Dave Douglas to her stellar working band and showcased her original compositions more than on any previous recording.

Henning Sommerro: Borders

Borders is the 6th album in Stereo and 5.1 Channel Surround Sound DSD from the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra that is available from NativeDSD Music.

Using a deep time perspective composer Henning Sommerro chooses themes from myths and from European history. Three works for soloist and orchestra and three visions encounter resistance before they struggle forward to possible redemption and resolution.

The first work is Solstice. The skald Sigvat Tordsson is on his way to the eternal city. It is just before the summer solstice, and the skald has time to reflect about important issues in his life and times – and to think about who to include in his visions.

We are enticed further to Ostara, and the mysterious spring goddess of the same name. A lot is at stake as the vernal equinox approaches. A matter of one step forward and two back. Under the ground bilateral lines of communication are busy signalling spring … or are they? The sense of seriousness is heightened, and the last work gives the album’s title extra gravity.

In Borders we move to our own time. The year is 2016, and our world picture is shaken by a stream of refugees the like of which Europe has not seen since the Second World War. Accusations across countries’ borders proliferate. It is the others who are responsible for taking in refugees, and hopes for a united response are collapsing. Who dares acknowledge and respond to the alarming roar of the work’s opening?

Archora/Aion is the 4th album from the Iceland Symphony Orchestra at Native DSD Music. This new release features music composed by Anna Thorvaldsdottir. Sono Luminus says “We’re thrilled to release the newest recordings of Anna’s works, performed by the Iceland Symphony & led by Eva Ollikainen.”

The core inspiration behind Archora centers around the notion of a primordial energy and the idea of an omnipresent parallel realm – a world both familiar and strange, static and transforming, nowhere and everywhere at the same time. The piece revolves around the extremes on the spectrum between the Primordia and its resulting afterglow – and the conflict between these elements that are nevertheless fundamentally one and the same. The halo emerges from the Primordia but they have both lost perspective and the connection to one another, experiencing themselves individually as opposing forces rather than one and the same.

Aion is inspired by the abstract metaphor of being able to move freely in time, of being able to explore time as a space that you inhabit rather than experiencing it as a one-directional journey through a single dimension. Disorienting at first, you realize that time extends simultaneously in all directions and whenever you feel like it, you can access any moment. As you learn to control the journey, you find that the experience becomes different by taking different perspectives – you can see every moment at once, focus on just some of them, or go there to experience them. You are constantly zooming in and out, both in dimension and perspective. Some moments you want to visit more than others, noticing as you revisit the same moment, how your perception of it changes. This metaphor is connected to a number of broader background ideas in relation to the work: How we relate to our lives, to the ecosystem, and to our place in the broader scheme of things, and how at any given moment we are connected both to the past and to the future, not just of our own lives but across – and beyond – generations.

“As with my music generally, the inspiration behind Archora and Aion is not something I am trying to describe through the music or what the music is “about”, as such. Inspiration is a way to intuitively tap into parts of the core energy, structure, atmosphere and material of the music I am writing each time. It is a fuel for the musical ideas to come into existence, a tool to approach and work with the fundamental materials, the ideas and sensations, that provide and generate the initial spark to the music – the various sources of inspiration are ultimately effective because I perceive qualities in them that I find musically captivating. I do often spend quite a bit of time finding ways to articulate some of the important elements of the musical ideas or thoughts that play certain key roles in the origin of each piece but the music itself does not emerge from a verbal place, it emerges as a stream of consciousness that flows, is felt, sensed, shaped and then crafted. So inspiration is a part of the origin story of a piece, but in the end the music stands on its own.”

The Trondheim Concertos

The Trondheim Concertos is the 5th album at NativeDSD featuring members of the Trondheim Symphony from 2L. This recording portrays a selection of contemporaneous music that is preserved in Trondheim.

The manuscripts may be found in the Gunnerus Library’s special collections and probably belonged to the town musician and polymath Johan Daniel Berlin and his circle of musicians. They provide a unique insight into how European instrumental music found fertile ground in one of Denmark and Norway’s largest provincial towns in the decades preceding the union’s dissolution in 1814.

As the eighteenth century progressed, Trondheim experienced strong economic growth. The Great Nordic War was over, and merchants set about exporting timber, stockfish, and copper from the mines of Trøndelag. They maintained close contact with their networks in the main cities of Northern Europe, and Trondheim’s luxury and extravagance characterized its social milieu. Thus, the latest fashions, literature and music from the Continent found their way to Trondheim.
