The Hazelrigg Brothers play the Music of Led Zeppelin in Pure DSD 256 Stereo!

Where The Path Runs Straight And High is the 3rd album from the Hazelrigg Brothers on Outer Marker Records.  It is their tribute to the Music of Led Zeppelin recorded in Pure DSD 256. Exclusively available at NativeDSD in the recorded format and bit rate of Stereo Pure DSD 256!

The album follows their earlier releases Songs We Like: Deluxe Edition [Pure DSD] and Synchronicity: An Interpretation of the album by The Police. Both available at NativeDSD as well as their recent appearance on the album Time To Be Brave by Corrie Lynn Green & Her Band with the Hazelrigg Brothers.

As children of the nineteen-eighties, the Hazelrigg Brothers grew up with a variety of excellent music. From jazz fusion to synthesizer-driven pop to rock, the music industry was alive with innovation. At the same time, the classic rock radio format was born.

Led Zeppelin was, for us and many of our peers growing up (musicians and otherwise), the most significant in the pantheon of recording artists that now define so much of American, British, and world culture. They sat at an intersection of Elizabethan music, delta blues, and the technology of the day. Each member was a master of their instrument(s), and the ensemble was greater than their sum.

Where the Path Runs Straight and High is an adaptation and distillation of these elements into the format where we live a large portion of our musical lives: An intimate acoustic trio setting, not wielding the sheer sound pressure levels of a concert at Madison Square Garden, but with our careful attention on extracting the nectar of the genius in these songs.

George Hazelrigg, Piano
Geoff Hazelrigg, Double Bass
John O’Reilly, Drums

PLEASE NOTE The 2ch DXD version may download and show the name dxd-bi meaning binaural, but it is indeed the normal Stereo 2 channel version. We are working on correcting this naming issue.

Times Of The Day: Morning, Daylight, Evening is a concert series featuring the work of Johann Sebastian Bach, considered the greatest genius in the history of music. The composer spent many years studying Italian musical style, copying works by Vivaldi, analyzing the works of Corelli and Frescobaldi, among others.

In 1735 he composed the Italian Concerto in F Major, which, as a result of his meticulous research combined with genius, became one of Bach’s most popular works. It is followed by Ludwig van Beethoven’s ‘Waldtsein’ Sonata. The composer’s Op. 53 in C Major is one of the greatest sonatas in the piano repertoire and the twenty-first work of his in the genre.

Also in three movements, it opens with the taut rhythm of horses galloping. After a brief Intermezzo, the third movement is grandiose, reminiscent of a sunrise. The two concluding movements of the concert are the best-known works in Liszt’s cycle of Paganini etudes.

It was the playing of his contemporary, the great Italian violinist, that inspired the Hungarian composer-pianist to translate the virtuosic and profound playing of Niccolo Paganini, who had mastered the violin to the highest level, into the possibilities offered by the piano. Thus were born the Paganini etudes, known as the greatest challenge of all, of which the sixth in A Minor and the third in G Sharp Minor, the bells, better known as “La campanella”, are the most known.

As an encore, the concert will feature Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s choral work “Ave verum corpus”,
arranged for piano by Ferenc Liszt. The work, one of the composer’s last, is rich in subtlety and depth.

Born Of The Day is the 3rd album at NativeDSD from the Corridor Bassoon Quartet. Following their earlier albums Corridors and Into The Groove. The album is exclusively available at NativeDSD in its recorded format and bit rate of Stereo Pure DSD 256.

The corridor leads from somewhere to somewhere, and through all kinds of doors you can enter Renaissance halls, Baroque church halls, smoky cellars of jazz pubs, modern rooms, blue or red salons, or even the wide-open natural landscapes of folk music. And it is just such a wide variety of music that this ensemble plays, without any genre restrictions, almost just making music for pleasure, pushing its own boundaries.

Tibor Csuhaj-Barna is a jazz double bass player and composer, and an associate professor (DLA) at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. Over the last 35 years he has been an active performer on the Hungarian jazz scene, compiling and playing on many CDs. He has written music for theatres, choirs, and jazz lineups ranging from duos to big band. Born of a Day by Tibor Csuhaj-Barna is a kind of triptych, consisting of three large units and eleven small movements.

Volume V of the Hidden Voices: Mozart Piano Sonatas series

Having listened for over half a century to tens of thousands of recordings of Mozart’s music, be it piano music, string quartets, symphonies, operas, et al, I have been hugely energized by these recordings, not because they are so great, but because they are usually so terrible.

Any ten fingers of almost any pianist can play these relatively simple notes, that however require an altogether different pianist to metamorphose them into music. Since experiencing Mozart primarily as a youngster playing my first sonatas and concertos, I immediately felt there were deeper layers than just the melodic oil slick floating at the surface, so have been steadfastly cutting away 200 years of accumulated varnish, and drilling down to the nub of Mozart’s music throughout my long career as a concert performer. The objective – lifting Mozart’s Sonatas out of the Egyptian section of museums and breathing new life into them. Though not a fortepianist, I still adhere closer to his markings than most pianists, but try to imagine how he might have played these sonatas on the modern Steinway.

The subterranean – often chromatic voices and harmonies in Mozart’s music reveal him demonstrably as a composer far greater than merely a gifted melodist, and this is why I have called this series of recordings of the complete Mozart Piano Sonatas – Hidden Voices.

As a special collaboration we bring you Pure DSD Recordings, Vol. 2: The Hunnia Records Edition. The entire 13-song track list was hand chosen by Hunnia Records’ owner and producer Robert Zoltan Hunka to showcase his wide catalogue of Pure DSD recordings. Safe to say one album is not nearly enough, but it’s a start!

The songs included on this album were recorded at Stereo Pure DSD 256 and Pure DSD 128 and each album was delivered to us from the original edit master without any PCM processing. This album is available in Stereo DSD 512, DSD 256, DSD 128 and DSD 64 thanks to our Higher Rates Program.

We classify Pure DSD albums as ‘recordings where mixing and balancing are performed in the Analog or DSD domain prior to digitizing. With no post-processing in PCM.’ We obtain the DSD master files directly from the labels, and present them to you exactly as they listened to them in their final mastering session.

We thank the recording artists, producers, recording engineers, mastering engineers and of course Hunnia Records for producing music in the DSD domain without PCM processing.

Inspired by the Sisters of the Moon paintings by the surrealist artist Leonora Carrington, the concept behind this album revolves around the Pleiades, or Seven Sisters. Metaphorically embodied by the composers who feature on this album: Montgeroult, Mendelssohn, Beach, Larrocha, Boulanger, Price, Montero, Pérez and Susana Gómez Vázquez.

The album is an ode to that cluster of female composers who, despite their different nationalities and cultures, connect us through this fascinating voyage of sonorities. It is a Pure DSD 256 recording with no DXD or PCM processing used in the releases at NativeDSD from the Edit Master Source.

According to Greek mythology, these nymphs, also known as the dancers, served the goddess Artemis. They lived a life devoted to love and rebelled against the obligation to preserve their virginity. One day, on being pursued by the hunter Orion, they were given their freedom by being transformed into doves and then a cluster of stars in the night sky.

In Inca mythology, they are seen as the mothers of the universe. In a way, the Pleiades are metaphorically embodied by the composers who feature on this album: Montgeroult, Mendelssohn, Beach, Larrocha, Boulanger, Price, Montero, Pérez and me. This is why most of the works on Sisters of the Moon are either linked to night-time, when the stars can be glimpsed in the sky, or related to love and dancing.

The Secret Life Of Sound from Trio Sordini is a new Stereo Pure DSD 256 World Music recording from Hunnia.  Exclusively available in Pure DSD 256 Stereo from NativeDSD.

Sound strings of different origins,. Taken out of the system of a theatrical performance, can interact with each other and tell further intricate stories. Both for the musicians and, even more so, for the audience.

As time goes by, more and more new melodies and rhythms emerge in Trio Sordini’s sometimes seemingly endless labyrinth of sound. Composition and improvisation, a journey from everywhere to everywhere.

Anna Fedorova explores the Intrigues Of The Darkness in these programmatic and extremely virtuosic works for solo piano. The album was recorded and mixed in Stereo and 5 Channel Surround Sound Pure DSD 256. It is exclusively available in Pure DSD 256 from NativeDSD! This is a DSD Exclusive, Not Available on SACD release.

The journey from darkness to light begins with Scriabin’s terrifying “Black Mass” Sonata. The work represents a satanic ritual that is possessed by the specter of the Mephistophelian Liszt. De Falla’s Suite from El Amor brujo conjures a mysterious world, full of magic, rituals and ghost visitations. Ravel described his Gaspard de la nuit as “romantic and of transcendent virtuosity”.

These highly evocative pieces are based on Aloysius Bertrand’s prose poems depicting scenes of a hanged man sighing on the gallows and a devilish dwarf. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition portrays many scenes of darkness but emerges into light with the Great Gate of Kiev, in which triumphant episodes alternate with moments of religious contemplation.\

Often some great actors are more excited about the roles of villains over heroes because they are limitless in terms of interpretation and always give room to try new things and go to extremes in search of your character. I guess I could relate to that. And it’s so fascinating to explore the different ways of four composers I chose for this album and their approach to the darkness, mystery and supernatural.

A New Pure DSD 256 Stereo Recording from the Edit Master Source – Only at NativeDSD!

Scordatura: The Out Of Tune Consonance by guitarist Gergely Szurgyi features the technique, when the musician changes the standard or traditional tuning of an instrument. It has a great tradition on plucked stringed instruments.

Altering a tuning changes the tension of the strings and the soundboard, which results in a different sound character of the guitar. The player has the freedom to lower the tuning for more depth and warmth in the sound sacrificing some volume, to tune higher in order to achieve more brightness, brilliance and volume or to tune in both direction to completely mix up and change the sound.

In most cases not only the sound will be different, but the fingerings and grips on the fretboard as well, because the intervals between the strings are modified, which can be disturbing and a great challenge for the musician.

In the program of this album, I wanted to give a partial summary of my “life on the guitar” so far, and to show how scordatura and extended guitars can open up new horizons in guitar playing.
