The poem evokes real-life experiences and reflections arising from Crispin’s 20 year search through paper records and via physical travels, seeking information about her Indigenous Australian heritage. Eventually Crispin discovered a solitary photo of her great-great-grandmother, Charlotte.

The musical setting, with its sharp contrasts, and sometimes lyrical, sometimes insistent melodies, honours the raw complexities of the poem. The Australian Landscape is also depicted, specifically Lake Moodemere (possible translation ‘waterhole that never dries up’) where it’s likely Charlotte was born and died.

I visited this peaceful but haunting place in northern Victoria twice while composing Charlotte, making musical sketches and field recordings amongst the ancient River Red Gums. On the second trip a Golden Whistler visited me and sang a distinctive local variation of that bird’s call. That call appears here in various forms, most significantly when Charlotte herself speaks: ‘Where did you go girl?’.

To Haimovitz, playing Silvestrov’s music and celebrating Ukrainian culture with native-born Nadia Shpachenko has been a wonderfully meaningful experience. The collaboration on this recording gave Shpachenko  an outlet to convey her pain about the war, while projecting hope.

Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov’s Postludium No. 3 merges the cello and piano organically into one celestial, loving breath, a metaphor for the power of music to unify in a divisive world. Playing Silvestrov’s music and celebrating Ukrainian culture with nativeborn Nadia Shpachenko has been a wonderfully meaningful experience. Slava Ukraini!

We bring this DSD Single to you in Stereo and 5.1 Channel Surround Sound DSD 256 and DSD 128 plus Stereo DSD 512 for the first time at NativeDSD. 

Originally released in 1998, Modern Cool is finally available as a Stereo and 5.1 Channel Surround Sound DSD 256, 128, 64 and DXD as well as Stereo DSD 512 music download. Patricia Barber prefers these formats for their “maximum clarity and definition”.
