On the specially priced DSD EP Campanella, guitarist Sean Shibe performs pieces by jazz musicians Chick Corea and Avishai Cohen, all arranged by his friend and fellow guitarist Forbes Henderson.

Corea’s Children’s Songs and Cohen’s Remembering share a gentle playfulness and introspective simplicity, enhanced by Shibe’s intimate performance on classical guitar.

Campanella literally means “little bell” in Spanish, and the word refers to the way the bassline overlaps with the upper line throughout the arrangement of Avisha’s piece, creating a bell effect.

The ripple effects of the war in Ukraine are extending human suffering far beyond its borders, exacerbating a global crisis unseen in at least a generation. Morten Jessen began composing KYIV shortly after war began, inspired by the courage and strength of Kyiv’s defenders. While he was composing his piece, he corespondent with the Ukrainian priest Viktor Marynchak who held services in the darkness of the Kharkiv subway during Russias’ six-month siege of the city.

Ukrainian violinist Natalia Gordeyeva learned of Jessen’s composition and felt her own story reflected in the music and contacted the composer. Since then, the two have collaborated closely on a series of charity concerts for Ukraine, performing at venues such as the National Museum in Copenhagen, Elsinore Cathedral, Radio and Television in Denmark, and for the Danish Prime minister, Parliament and the Danish King Frederik X and Queen Mary.

The piece is also scheduled to be performed in Ukraine on a Tour in Ukraine in May, including concerts in Kyiv Philharmonic and Lviv Philharmonic Hall.

Morten Jessen is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, founder of the Nordic Church Ensemble and organist at Høsterkøb Church in North Zealand. Throughout his works he has explored the effect of sacred spaces on musical sound and many of his works strive to create a dreamy and timeless expression.

Born in Kyiv, violinist Natalia Gordeyeva performed her first solo recital at the age of 7. At the age of 10 she performed as a soloist with the Kyiv Camerata chamber orchestra. She would continue her meteoric rise becoming an in-demand soloist and chamber partner, and later, teacher of her own academy. Following the Invasion of Ukraine, she evacuated to Denmark and committed herself to promoting Ukrainian culture in Europe. She was quickly re-established as a brilliant musician and performed at the numerous Ukraine-supporting events and charity concerts.

Williams: Violin Concerto No. 1 featuring violinist James Ehnes, with St. Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted byStéphane Denève is a DSD EP, taken from an upcoming release on Pentatone.

This EP has been sourced from the DXD original edit master and is available only at NativeDSD.

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (SLSO) and their music director Stéphane Denève present a wonderful program featuring John Williams’ Concerto for violin and orchestra performed by star James Ehnes, one of the most exceptional North American violinists.

John Williams himself was present at the recording of his violin concerto. Working together with the SLSO, Denève and Ehnes.

Revolving around love, Williams’s work was arguably inspired and eventually dedicated to his suddenly deceased wife.

Williams was not afraid of crossing the boundaries between film music and “serious” classical genres at a time when these worlds were generally kept far apart. In this concerto there are still hints of his work as a film composer; the slow movement brings to mind a scene of emotional gravity.

Cellist Michael Kevin Jones and guitarist Agustin Maruri return to NativeDSD with their new specially priced DSD EP titled Joaquin Rodrigo from HR Recordings.

“Como una Fantasía” for solo cello was written in 1979 nearly 40 years after Joaquin Rodrigo had written his iconic “Concierto de Aranjuez”. It was written for the Mexican cellist Carlos Prieto.

This piece take us on a musical journey into a world of extreme tonal contrasts between the dissonance and the lyrical Spanish “Tonadilla”. The cello is pushed to its technical limits as a solo instrument but the result is a unique piece of virtuosity and romantic intensity.

Rodrigo understood perfectly the nature of the instrument, its vast tonal range, colors and technical possibilities. This work from his mature days is a master piece for the solo cello repertoire.

When the “Concierto de Aranjuez” for guitar and orchestra was premiered in 1940 almost no one could have suspected the fabulous success that the work received.

“Aranjuez ma pensée” is an adaptation made by the composer himself for voice and guitar, incorporating a text in French written by his wife, Victoria Kamhi. The substitution of the voice for the cello adds a dimension of depth to this iconic melody.

John Rutter’s Visions is an unusual—and highly effective—work combining elements of a violin concerto (at times redolent of Vaughan Williams’s Lark Ascending) with ethereal boys’ voices into an expression of unabashed utopian optimism.

This new DSD EP by the King’s College Cambridge Choir could hardly wish for more distinguished performers. It is Exclusively Available at NativeDSD in Stereo DSD 512, DSD 256, DSD 128, DSD 64 and DXD

“Visions” was the result of a most unusual invitation: to write a piece combining solo violin, string ensemble (to which I added a harp), and the boy choristers of the Temple Church choir. The occasion was a concert at the Temple Church in London forming part of the 2016 Menuhin Competition, at which two past winners of that renowned violin competition were to perform.

My assigned soloist was the dazzling 19-year-old Canadian violinist Kerson Leong. Having immediately decided to accept, my thoughts soon turned to the historic associations of the Temple Church with the Knights Templar—the church takes its name from the Temple at Jerusalem, and the round shape of its most ancient part is a deliberate echo of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

‘Jerusalem’ is of course more than the name of a middle-eastern city: it stands as a symbol both of God’s people and of a utopian ideal of heavenly peace and seraphic bliss in store for redeemed humanity.
