A Pure DSD 256 Stereo One Microphone Recording

It is one thing to return to the country of one’s childhood and feel so much at home. It’s another to be able to record there the music which, over the years, has become a symbol of a lost and cherished childhood.

In 2023 I undertook a return trip to Hungary with my daughter; I wanted her to see the land of her mother’s early childhood, as well as that of her forebears. It was a deeply moving experience as I re-discovered my roots, my strong connection with this land and its traditions and culture. In late 1957 my parents and I emigrated to Australia. This was a move to which I could not reconcile myself for a long time: those first years of life immersed in Hungarian culture and music in particular were so rich, so sustaining, and I had lost these.

Steeped in Hungarian folksong and classical music as I had been, it was hard to get my bearings in a new/old land. Eventually, I became a pianist with a career that began in my teenage years at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music during which time I already performed as soloist, chamber musician and concerto soloist with orchestras. With scholarships, I ended up for many years in the UK, at first studying at the Royal College of Music and then going on to study with Louis Kentner, Albert Ferber and others in the UK, Austria and Switzerland. My performing career involved many appearances at festivals, music societies, solo and chamber recitals on the South Bank, the Wigmore Hall and other venues. In the 1980’s I recorded extensively as a soloist for the BBC. Returning to Australia in the late 80’s, these activities continued with concerts and recordings for the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) and teaching, adjudicating, accompanying and coaching young musicians.

‘For Children’ is a product of Bartók’s extensive early collecting of folk songs and the new direction to which they led him musically, whereas Mikrokosmos displays the extraordinary assimilation of folk song elements within his mature musical vocabulary. ‘For Children’ (composed originally in 1908/9) consists of the songs more or less in their original form but with the most imaginative and sympathetic harmonisation possible.

The composition of ‘Mikrokosmos’, on the other hand, was a much later venture for Bartók (1927 to 1939). Originally commenced as a piano ‘tutor’ (books 1 and 2) for his son, Péter, it eventually grew into an exhaustive lexicon of diverse technical and musical elements with some truly inspired material, providing a comprehensive training for students of the piano and musicians generally. The culmination was Volume 6, in which his inventiveness took a decidedly virtuoso turn; indeed, the last 6 pieces – Dances in Bulgarian Rhythm – were dedicated to the English concert pianist, Harriet Cohen.

To be able to record these in Hungary with Hunnia Records is the fulfilment of a dream and I do hope it will be of interest to listeners to hear how a Hungarian can still remain a Hungarian in spite of years living elsewhere.

Julie Adam, Piano

Cloud Song is a One Microphone Recording that features Suzan Veneman and the Undercurrent Trio. The album celebrates the essence of existence itself.

From the delicate flutter of a damselfly in the reeds to the serene glide of a gadwall in the water, from the melodious chirp of a wren amidst low vegetation to the graceful flight of Spoonbills overhead, and the sun’s elongated shadows on a balmy summer evening.  Through its kaleidoscopic lens the album prompts us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the myriad wonders of the natural world, urging us to safeguard the fragile harmony that nurtures life on our planet.

The unique combination of instruments brings the composition’s heartfelt melodies, strong rhythms, and spontaneous creativity to life through expressive freedom and lively interplay. At the same time, the effective use of musical space makes for a captivating listening experience.

“The music on Cloud Song is closely related to the strong friendship with two of my favorite musicians of all times: Guillermo ‘Rusty’ Celano and Marcos ‘The Marx’ Baggiani. I’ve been creating music with Guillermo and Marcos for many years now and it continues to be magical.

Letting Suzan Veneman contribute her flawless playing, innovative musical concepts, and stunning improvisations to the trio’s sound truly breathed new life into everything.

She is a joy to work with and I hope to prolong this musical friendship for many years to come.”

Suzan Veneman – Trumpet & Flugelhorn
Iman Spaargaren – Tenor Saxophone, Clarinet & Bass Clarinet
Guillermo Celano – Guitar
Marcos Baggiani – Drums

Recorded “off-the-floor” on 1/4″ Analog Tape on a Nagra IV-S Tape Recorder in CCIR eq curve, with no overdubs and no editing. This is a wonderful, spontaneous, direct recording by René Laflamme at L’Église St-Jean Baptiste in Montreal on October 28, 2019. Down To The Downtown is a One Microphone Recording that is the 5th album at NativeDSD featuring Double Bass player Paul Berner. on the Sound Liaison label. His earlier albums at NativeDSD include This Bird Has Flown: The Music of Lennon and McCartney, Road To Memphis, The Gift (One Microphone Recording) and Amulet.

Down to the Downtown is available from NativeDSD in Stereo DSD 512, DSD 256, DSD 128, DSD 64, DXD 32 bit and DXD 24 bit.

After musicians have mastered their instrument, refined their craft, and unearthed their distinctive voice, they face the ultimate trial. It appears deceptively simple: to wholeheartedly surrender to the music at hand, yielding only to its demands. Yet, as any musician will attest, this seemingly uncomplicated task proves to be the paramount challenge of all.

Tim Langedijk and Paul Berner epitomize mastery in music. Residing just a stone’s throw away from each other in Haarlem, the Netherlands, they began convening in their spare time, forsaking amplification, effects, or grandiose pretenses opting instead for the raw, acoustic sound of their instruments and the pure desire to let the music speak for itself. As the sessions grew in frequency, a remarkable synergy emerged; together, they discovered that their music gained newfound depth and resonance.

Down To The Downtown is the culmination of their collaboration. With a repertoire that spans the spectrum, from cherished classics to hidden gems to entirely new compositions, all presented with their signature minimalist touch. It’s music distilled to its essence, created with minimal means an embodiment of excellence through restraint.

Songs highlighted on the album include Tupelo by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Ramblin’ Rose by Nat King Cole, The Book of Love by Peter Gabriel and Maybe I’m Amazed by Paul McCartney.

Gidon Nunes returns to NativeDSD with his third album Dream Dancer: The Music of Cole Porter. It follows the earlier albums Ebb Tide and Embrace Me – the 2020 NativeDSD Album of the Year for Jazz Ensemble with Vocals. The album is also the latest One Microphone Recording from Sound Liaison.

Cole Porter’s music depicts brilliant melodies, harmony, rhythm, and form. Simultaneously, his lyrics exhibit a sense of humorous poetry, featuring wordplay and layers of meaning that invite the listener to discover their own interpretation.

In contrast with the light and joyous side, there is also tremendous melancholy in Porter’s music. This contrast speaks to me. Looking back on a year of sleep deprivation and challenges, the titles on this album somehow reflect the melancholy, challenge, joy and growth of this period. This is what great songs do, they become personal, allowing each composition to resonate uniquely with your emotions and experiences.

So ‘Dream Dancer: The Music of Cole Porter’ is more than just an album; it’s a reflection of life’s diverse experiences through music. It’s about finding your meaning in these songs and connecting with the stories they tell.

For this high resolution Stereo DXD recording of this great jazz trio, I chose the technique of recording with only a single stereo microphone. The advantages of the One Microphone approach to recording are obvious; phase coherence, perfect imaging, great sense of depth, and superior realism. Traditional mixing is no longer an option. Instead, we must construct the entire sound stage in real time by meticulously adjusting the distance of each instrument to the microphone. The benefits of this way of working are that the result is completely free of phase errors and the sound is very natural with a wide deep soundstage. Another advantage is that it forces the band being recorded to play!

There is nowhere to hide, no fixing it in the mix. It gives the music a realness that one does not often encounter in these modern A.I. times. All musicians have been struck by the incredible authenticity of the recordings and commented that they never heard their instrument sound so real and lively.”

Now Available in Stereo Pure DSD 512, DSD 256 and DSD 64!

For their second release at NativeDSD, Outer Marker brings us Murmurations from pianist Marcia Hadjimarkos. This is a Stereo Pure DSD 128 recording that is exclusively available in the recorded format and bit rate at NativeDSD Music – and now in Stereo Pure DSD 512, DSD 256 and DSD 64.

Murmurations features Marcia Hadjimarkos performing on an 1887 New York Steinway Model B. The album is a One Microphone Recording captured with an AEA R88 Stereo Ribbon Microphone through two channels of D.W. Fearn all-tube Preamplfication direct to Stereo DSD 128. Additional ambience was provided by a Lexicon 224X Digital Reverb.

Marcia tells us about the album “After a long gestation period due to the pandemic, I can’t believe Murmurations is finally taking flight! I’m excited and honored to join Native DSD’s great lineup of musicians, and extend heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped to shape the album.”

What brings these pieces together? They span and slightly overlap the 20th Century, with Satie’s Gnossiennes and Danses de Travers dating from the tail end of the 19th century (when the piano used on this recording was built), Pärt’s Für Anna Maria written in 2006, and the works of Cage, Monk, Tailleferre, Glass, Mompou and Skempton falling in between.

Eight composers, all associated with minimalism to a greater or lesser degree, born in the United States, France, England, Spain, and Estonia. Eight approaches to resonance, pattern, repetition, layering, phrasing, form, color, touch, texture, and volume on the piano.

The ways their music dovetails remind me of a murmuration, a cloud of iridescent starlings swirling and shape-shifting through the sky at dusk, seemingly at random but in fact governed by each bird’s observation of the seven other birds nearest it. So: a small murmuration of seven, plus one extra for luck, inspired by the enthusiasm of friends, students, and other musicians, and by my own reactions to the mesmerising qualities of this music in all its diversity, and the way it pulls me in time and again. This selection only scratches the surface of the works that fall under the capacious umbrella of minimalism, but it’s a start.”

Marcia Hadjimarkos, Pianist

PapaJazz, the Jazz Swing Music Band from Hunnia, returns to NativeDSD with their second album Let’s Dance (One Microphone Recording). Like their earlier album Eisemann Songbook (One Microphone Recording in Pure DSD 256), this album highlights the music of the ’20s,’30s and ’40s. It is also a One Microphone Recording use a single AEA R88 Stereo Ribbon Microphone.

PapaJazz says “By now we’re having less arrangements, less preparation so that we can be more spontaneous, our focus is more on improvisation. The songs on this current album is mainly music from the 20s and 30s of America. This album is a time travel with dancing – a real ‘old school’ jazz with the most popular songs from the ‘20s, ’30s and ’40s.”

Sax Player Arpad Dennert, a member of PapaJazz and the Jazz band ArpiTalk tells us “PapaJazz regularly plays for Lindy Hoppers for many years. On this album we present a bunch of the most popular songs among dancers. Enjoy and let’s dance!”
