We are aware that we are dealing here with a world class band. The combination of these musicians with our tube equipment has brought us to the highest result what we have brought in our career so far. It is a privilege for us to be able to create this product with these professional musicians in our professional studio.
– Rinus Hooning, Artone Recording Engineer

In October 2022, Djabe took part in a special recording session at the ARTONE studio belongs to Record Industry pressing plant in Haarlem, The Netherlands. The band direct-to-disc recorded 4 sides of the double album at 45 RPM. The recording was done on the Direct Metal Mastering cutting machine, using High-End analogue equipments only.

Djabe is known for the excellent sound of its recordings and vinyl records. They recorded several of their albums using analogue technology, and they always cut their records from analogue master tapes, but they have not yet recorded any of their albums directly to record.

The high-quality technique of the ARTONE studio and the professional knowledge of the studio’s staff make the result unique in the band’s history. The discs reproduce analog sound at a level that is also outstanding internationally.

Tamás Barabás, the band’s sound engineer and bassist, worked closely with the studio’s professionals, including engineers Rinus Hooning and Martijn Schouten during the recording.

At the same time as the direct-to-disc recording, the band also recorded the music on tape. There were two reasons for this. On the one hand, they could listen back to the album sides’ takes, they had to play in one run, and they were able to decide whether the given album side could be the master or whether a new take should be recorded. At the same time, the master tapes in this way made it possible to produce high-quality master tape copies.

The dazzling sound and enigmatic performances of Patricia Barber’s latest jazz spellbinder Higher is the first of Impex’s latest high-end audio offering: Reel-to-reel tapes! They’ve given the “Impex Treatment” into very small runs of 15 IPS, 1/4” tapes as our LPs and digital products, making Impex REELS a step-above. Renowned mastering engineer Scott Hull at Masterdisk will record Jim Anderson’s original 32 bit/352.8 kHz DXD masters directly to tape with no additional processing. What you hear on Impex REELS is exactly what Anderson and Barber intended.

Impex REELS are made to order, one at a time, transferred and assembled by hand. Each package includes two 15 IPS 1/4” tapes in individual boxes, complete large-format booklets from the LP versions, a deluxe tip-on printed case for each reel in the set, and a certificate of authenticity from Scott Hull.

Pushing Boundaries

“Throughout my career as a singer, pianist, and songwriter, I’ve been pushing the boundaries of songwriting. I’ve recently been drawn to writing songs that combine lyrical poetry with a rich harmonic language, pulling from classical music as well as the circumscribed system of harmony in jazz and classic American song. Shulamit Ran, composer, friend, and mentor, has been instrumental in teaching me how to access a limitless harmonic vista. This album features “Angels, Birds, and I…,” a new song cycle that portrays this musical adventure, pushing the frontiers of my songwriting all the way into art song. I’m happy to say that classical singers as well as jazz singers are performing these songs.

In 2015 I had the honor of performing “Angels, Birds, and I…” along with other songs of mine at Chicago’s Harris Theater with the incomparable Renée Fleming. Together we also toured my songs in concerts in NY and Washington D.C., and in 2016 Renée sang them at a Carnegie Hall recital. Her performance of “Higher,” a song I wrote for my mother, at the sold-out 4,152-seat Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Champaign-Urbana, was a gift she gave me I will never forget.

In 2016 Augusta Read Thomas and the Ear Taxi New Music Festival asked me to open the festival with these songs. I was honored by the request. The songs are at once “contemporary” and indebted to traditional jazz and classical harmony—art songs that are unique to my synthesis of sonorities and forms and offer a new landscape for singers and instrumentalists.

In addition to “Angels, Birds, and I…,” this album will include some instrumentals and covers, just for fun. We also hope to find an operatic soprano to sing one of the art songs, for my listening pleasure! and yours, of course.

Please join me as I share with you this very personal journey.”

The dazzling sound and enigmatic performances of Patricia Barber’s latest jazz spellbinder CLIQUE! is the first of Impex’s latest high-end audio offering: Reel-to-reel tapes!

Each package includes two 15 IPS 1/4” tapes in individual boxes, complete large-format booklets from the LP versions, a deluxe tip-on printed case for each reel in the set, and a certificate of authenticity from Scott Hull.

The long-awaited successor to Nightclub, her critically acclaimed and fan-favorite first all standards album, Clique! features a track list of tunes that Barber has frequently performed as encores throughout her illustrious career, including classics by Rodgers & Hammerstein, Stevie Wonder, Lee Hazlewood, Lerner & Loewe, Thelonious Monk and more. Each track renders every inflection of Barber’s voice with astounding presence and clarity, perfectly complementing her nuance in ways that continue to redefine the standards of sound.

After growing an international cult following, earning the first-ever Guggenheim Fellowship awarded to a non-classical songwriter, and becoming an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Patricia Barber is back with a “silk, velvet, languid, warm” journey through music history as she “respects traditions, bends them to make her own points, and freshens them into something new,” as noted in the album liner notes by NPR’s Susan Stamberg.

These are relaxed, communal sessions. Her long-time core duo of bassist Patrick Mulcahy and drummer Jon Deitemyer ride up and down, in and out of Barber’s complex, sensitive playing and reflective singing. The support of her long-term players, along with guitarist Neal Alger and saxophonist Jim Gailloretto allow her to shine brightly while digging out striking moments for their own unique contributions. The chemistry is palpable, all-encompassing. This group’s long-developed synergy—painstakingly curated by these musicians for years—provides both a metaphor and the perfect title for her new album.

Patricia Barber says:

The harmonic language of Jazz, as well as that of The Great American Songbook, is certainly rich. Look how much has come of out of it. But it’s circumscribed. I started wanting to hear something else.”

A custom-built carbon fiber headblock and a head damping electronic system permit 2xHD fusion to obtain more transparency and better 3D imaging.

2xHD Technical Information

The magnetic tape used for this product is the finest state-of-the-art on the market today. Buying an audio tape from 2xHD guarantees that ultimate quality is preserved from the original master in contrast to vinyl albums, CDs or other formats which are all generated from multiple generations of the original eg: tapes have been duplicated (made into ‘safety Copies’) from the master to be sent to mastering labs around the world from which more generations or conversions of the original are used for manufacturing and reproducing. At 2xHD we always use the original master tape for the transfer to your tape.

All transfer pollution which may be caused by cabling, audio consoles, electrical interference, and amplifiers, are eliminated in the 2xHD chain as we dig into the original recording, using more sophisticated power supplies, cables, etc. These procedures help lower tape noise at the lowest spectrum and bring out the second harmonics warmth associated with analog recordings, creating a fresh, new, yet authentic version of the original recording. We call the procedure ‘back to the future technology’. So, it’s fair to say that you own a recording that is superior to the original released product.

The transfer is made to the best magnetic tape on the market today, the SM900 Studio Master tape which has all the features of a master tape but is also designed for long storage. The formula was created by AGFA around 1973. This tape has the best Print-through protection and longest storage life. Tapes of this formula have been stored for more than 40 years — and display no deterioration of the coating or sound quality. It is often chosen by professionals who specialize in classical, instrumental or voice recordings due to the “transparent” sound of its formula.

Fusion Pure Analog Tape by 2xHD

Audio tapes from 2xHD guarantees that ultimate quality is preserved from the original master in contrast to vinyl albums, or CDs.

For the recording on this tape, the original 1/4″ 15 ips NAB or CCIR master tapes were played on a Nagra-T tape recorder, modified with high-end tube playback electronics, wired with OCC silver cables from the playback head direct to a Nick Doshi tube head preamplifier. The Nagra-T, with its four direct drive motors, two pinch rollers and a tape tension head, is one of the best transports ever made. A customer-built carbon fiber head block and a head damping electronic system permit 2HD Fusion to obtain more transparency and better 3D imaging. Your copy was recorded on a Nagra iV-S 1/4″ at 15 ips.

Reel to Reel Tape – Vol. 1

For some time now, NativeDSD.com has been offering Analog Reel-to-Reel Tapes from 2xHD Mastering. Native DSD Music also sells a number of Original Recordings and Analog Tape to DSD transfers from 2xHD.

2xHD has announced a Limited Deluxe Edition 2-Tape Set of Some Other Time: The Lost Session From The Black Forest by famed Jazz Pianist Bill Evans with Eddie Gomez on Bass and Jack DeJohnette on Drums. Some Other Time is one of NativeDSD’s DSD Best Sellers. A portion of the album has also been available on Analog Tape from 2xHD. Now, 2xHD is offering a 2-Tape Set of the album with all the tracks that are available on the DSD 256 download edition.

Limited to only 100 copies of this Deluxe 2-Tape Edition, the recordings on these tapes constitute the material from a June 20th, 1968, studio session recorded by Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer (HGBS) and Joachim-Ernst Brendt in Germany’s Black Forest. This is no ordinary recording. This enthralling Bill Evans session was recorded five days after a famous performance at the 1968 Montreux jazz festival by Evans, bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Verve’s Montreux live recording won a Grammy, but this studio session has been in the vaults ever since. 2xHD received Positive Feedback’s ‘Best Sounding album of the year’ award for this album two years in a row.

The Some Other Time Deluxe Edition Analog Tape Set is available now from NativeDSD for 779 Euros. You can also order the Stereo DSD 256, DSD 128 & DSD 64 editions of the album if you prefer these formats over Analog Tape.

Don’t just expect Dixieland from this album recorded in 1963 by Ewing Nunn and released by Jazzology Records. Nope.

As this six-man ensemble is going to deliver the William Tell overture, Granada, El Capitan (which is great), ah, so pure, and New Orleans like you’ve never heard before…cooking! This way-fun album is unquestionably a classic, and this is its finest incarnation, ready for your listening room.

Recorded live in 1963 at the Penn Sheraton’s River Boat Room in Pittsburgh, PA, this extremely rare recording of the Salt City Six plays the Classics in Dixieland was long a favorite of Harry Person of The Absolute Sound. When you put this on, close the doors and windows, and post a sign outside: do not disturb until the music stops.

The transfer is made to the best magnetic tape on the market today, the SM468 Studio Master tape which has all the features of a master tape but is also designed for long storage. Many sound engineers using Nagra recorders use the SM468 as their go-to tape since the past 45 years.
