Angelo Verploegen says “Over the last decade or so I find myself leaving the tempting and obvious juvenile trumpeting bravura more behind me and returning to my musical starting point: the flugelhorn. Although the instrument is a trumpet with a ’softer’ sound, and all too often treated like that by many trumpeters, the flugelhorn stands firmly by itself with all its own characteristics and specifications.

Literally being brought up with the flugelhorn, I feel at ease with the way the horn requires its own approach of phrasing and articulation. This enables me to reach the level of lyricism and intimacy I’m looking for in my playing.

So when Just Listen Records invited me to do a recording for the label at their specific terms (play live, in balance, no mixing, no editing, just capturing the live music as it is with the best possible equipment at the best suitable venue) it was obvious for me to return once more to my first love – the flugelhorn.

Having done numerous (sometimes over-organized) recording sessions with mostly originally composed and arranged repertoire I now felt the need for a lusher approach. More like a gathering of old friends, sharing each other’s life stories and experiences. That led me automatically to my old-time soulmate’s guitar player Ed Verhoeff and bassist Eric van der Westen. 17 years ago, we started off as Verploegen, Verhoeff & van der Westen, performing a lot and recording our critically acclaimed debut album The Night And The Daydreamer. Later, we changed the name into Amsterdam Jazz Trio for a Japan tour and released another album For The Time Being. And then, what often happens after several years of extensive work, we went our own ways… To be reunited for this unique recording project!

As for the repertoire, I simply picked ‘standard’ tunes I grew fond of over the years, looking for a certain degree of variety in melody, harmony, formal structure, keeping the drum-less trio sound in mind, allowing it to flourish, creating a casual, lush and intimate atmosphere.”

Bernstein’s five-time Tony award-winning musical follows sisters Ruth and Eileen on their quest to make it big, pursuing careers in writing and acting from their cramped basement apartment in New York’s bohemian Greenwich Village. Fresh from rural Ohio, the sisters end up getting more than they bargained for, realising that life in the Big Apple is not as glamourous as it may seem.

A bright and cheery love letter to the city that never sleeps and the colourful characters inhabiting it, Wonderful Town draws on Fields and Chodorov’s 1940 play My Sister Eileen, which itself is based on a series of autobiographical short storied by the ‘real-life’ Ruth McKenney.

Bernstein’s infectious score includes classic numbers such as ‘Ohio’, ‘One Hundred Easy Ways’, and ‘A Little Bit in Love’, as well as a riotous conga that had delighted audiences dancing in the aisles of the Barbican hall.

The silencing warmth of the recording can be experienced ahead of a purchase of the album by listening to his video performing one of the tracks from the album: the Agustin Barrios Mangore composition La Catedral: III. Allegro Solemne.

For this recording Sonodore microphones were used to bring the music to the Horus Analog to DSD 256 Converter from Merging Technologies. Eudora notes that “Of course, no DXD conversion and processing was applied, this is a pure DSD256 recording.”

En Silencio has a release date of March 16, 2018. But this album is too good to keep listeners waiting that long. So we have it for you today at the NativeDSD Music store in Stereo and Multichannel DSD 256 (the recorded DSD bit rate), DSD 128 and DSD 64.

Gonzalo Noqué, producer/engineer of Eudora Records, introduces this gorgeous new DSD 256 album with guitarist Ricardo Gallén in the NativeDSD Blog’s “Producer’s Notes” section. Gonzalo tells us: “Every time I record in DSD in the 13th Century Church of San Francisco, in Ávila (Spain) I marvel at the acoustics of this location and the ability of the DSD256 format to capture the nuances of the instruments and natural space acoustics.

To bring you the full benefit of this native DSD 256 recording, all the DSD files for En Silencio at the NativeDSD Music store use DSD rendering from the master DSD 256fs Stereo and Surround Sound recording. No DXD conversions, balancing and processing are present on this release.”

En Silencio (In Silence) is a Pure DSD release.  The album features a 5 Channel DSD 256 recording with no DXD processing that was produced and recorded by Gonzalo Noque. All the DSD bit rates at NativeDSD were created in the DSD Domain by NativeDSD Mastering Engineer Tom Caulfield from the DSD 256 original recording using the Signalyst HQ Player 4 Pro mastering tools.
