After composing his three last symphonies in as many months in the summer of 1788, Mozart started out on another mammoth project – a trio for strings of truly symphonic proportions. This visionary work with its somewhat unpretentious title “Divertimento in E flat major” revealed itself to be the quintessence of everything Mozart stood for as composer, craftsman and dramaturge.
With its six movements, a playing time of around 50 minutes and the grandeur of its musical lines it puts all earlier chamber music compositions in the shade – but was its greatness appreciated in Mozart’s time?

Voted the NativeDSD Album of the Year 2019 by customers, this is a very enjoyable album. Comprised of the six movements of Divertimento KV 563, there is much to like here—beginning with the album cover from a painting by Turner. This Divertimento is Mozart’s only work for String Trio. In six movements, it’s a large, expansive work written shortly after the last three of his symphonies. Call it a final symphony for just three strings.
TrioTaus perform it beautifully. With great finesse, they capture the complexity of the work, but don’t get caught adding overmuch grandiosity or seriousness to the performance. Instead, they nicely capture some of the light heartedness that flows through the composition.
Recorded in Sofienberg Church, Norway in June 2017, Morten Lindberg once again captures the nuance, timbre and dynamics of the instruments within a large natural acoustic setting, but never allows the reverberation of the space to muddy any of the detail.

There’s so much to like, even the cover of the digital booklet– a painting by Turner! This Divertimento in E flat major for Violin, Viola, and Cello is remarkable for so many reasons. It’s Mozart’s only work for Trio. It is a work of symphonic proportions.
Trio Taus performs it with love, bringing out the way it anticipates the future while utilizing the polyphony of Bach and before. Yes, it’s deceptively simple, yet remarkably sophisticated. 2L’s recording is perfect.
Even if Mozart is not your normal cup of tea, you must hear this!

Right from the first minutes of this recording, the TrioTaus surprises with an amazing sonority and purity of sound. Yet there is a lot more than a superb sound.
The vital performance has depth and gives Mozart’s late, six-movement Divertimento, written shortly after his last three symphonies, a great rhetoric power. The TrioTaus thus places this work, which has nothing in common with the early Divertimenti, on the level where it belongs, that of Mozart’s great masterpieces. It beautifully illustrates the complexity of this composition without being too serious and without abandoning the depth of the music. The recording is ideally balanced and the surround sound is very natural.
