2023 NativeDSD Album of the Year – Rock

Exit North‘s second studio album Anyway, Still continues the quartet’s appetite for exploring provocative song structures.

Weaving classic elements such as piano and strings into the layered threads of the bands material. Where intimacy and atmospherics give way to powerful dynamics, animated rhythms and grooves, driving distortions and crescendos in cinematic scale.

Like excavators with uncompromising autonomy, Exit North relish the exploration of every nuance and detail of the recorded performance.

The new edition of the Grammy Award winning album Modern Cool by Patricia Barber on Impex Records is Exclusively Available at NativeDSD.Com in Stereo & 5.1 Channel Surround Sound DSD 256, DSD 128 and DXD, Stereo DSD 512 and 5.1 Channel Surround Sound Dolby Atmos TrueHD and DTS MA MKV (with no height channels)

Album Recording Engineer and Surround Sound Producer Jim Anderson of Anderson Audio NY says “This release faithfully reproduces the original Stereo & 5.1 Surround Sound editions of the album.”

Patricia Barber’s Modern Cool was the recording that made Barber an International Jazz Star with a classic version of Light My Fire, first made famous by The Doors.

On the initial tour for this album, Barber played a four night stand at The Jazz Standard in New York where she was heard by Bruce Lundvall of Blue Note Records. This led to a string of Barber recordings for both Premonition and Blue Note, worldwide touring and unapologetic critical acclaim from which Barber never looked back.

Audiophiles were well aware of Barber from her 1994 Premonition recording Cafe Blue. Sonically, Modern Cool copied the Cafe Blue playbook: same recording studio, engineer, and recording approach. Musically, Barber added trumpeter Dave Douglas to her stellar working band and showcased her original compositions more than on any previous recording.

Grammy-Winning Audiophile Classic now with many First Time features:

  • First time Modern Cool has been offered as a digital download
  • Issued in Stereo & 5.1 Channel Surround Sound digital formats which Patricia Barber prefers for “maximum clarity and definition”

Sonically, one of the best recordings ever made by a Jazz Singer with small acoustic ensemble.
Downbeat, rated 5 stars

Smart songs about the way we think and live, not just about the way we love. This is the kind of art we need to be on the lookout for everywhere. The 21st century has started. We can’t afford to be left behind.

2023 NativeDSD Album of the Year – Classical Solo Instrumental

Rachmaninoff presents works by Sergei Rachmaninoff, performed by the critically acclaimed British pianist Sebastian Stanley.

These works have been associated closely with Sebastian his entire performing life, having been at the heart of many of his early career competition successes. They include the monumental but highly underrated Variations on a theme of Chopin and the seldom performed Nocturnes.

Sebastian’s previous albums by Albeniz and Granados have been praised with 5 star reviews in many major magazines such as Fanfare, the American Record Guide, Carnet Critique and Musical Pointers. With this new Hi Resolution release for HR recordings, he dips his toe into the world of one of the great pianist-composers of the Romantic era. It marks the start of a great collaboration between Sebastian Stanley and HR recordings, with many and diverse new recordings to come.

2023 NativeDSD Album of the Year – Chamber Music

Imagining how Bach himself might have transformed the Goldberg Variations for a chamber group, Rachel Podger and Brecon Baroque present a pioneering new arrangement of the Bach: Goldberg Variations Reimagined by Chad Kelly.

Employing a variety of instrumental combinations from a typical Bach ensemble of single strings, oboe, flute, bassoon and harpsichord, these newly-crafted Goldbergs illuminate exquisite responses to the various historical genres inherent in Bach’s scores. This beloved masterpiece was composed through a period of personal tumult for Bach; two unsuccessful job applications, the premature death of his son Gottfried, and criticism of his music in a prominent Hamburg publication.

Bach’s outpouring of beauty in the Goldberg Variations has long captured audience’s imaginations – Chad Kelly, Rachel Podger and her Brecon Baroque preserve the work’s exquisite intricacy while adding breadth, texture and color to its emotional backdrop. This revisioning of Bach’s Goldberg Variations is a perfect transformation of the work for the modern era.

I was keen that this arrangement would in some way reflect a broad sphere of influence. When I considered how best to use the instruments in each Variation, I was reminded of a quote from the late, great, historical wind player and musicologist Bruce Haynes, who believed that, “Bach valued the distinctive qualities of each instrument and wrote with friendship and affection for all of them”. – Chad Kelly

2023 NativeDSD Album of the Year – Classical Vocals

Magdalena Kožená’s album Folk Songs brings together folk-inspired song cycles from across the globe. Ranging from Berio’s Folk Songs to sets by Bartók, Ravel and Montsalvatge, this collection provides a kaleidoscope of twentieth-century orchestral song composition. Kožená performs them together with the Czech Philharmonic under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle.

Kozena says “Folk songs accompanied my entire childhood. My mum used to sing them while cooking or ironing and during our summer holiday evenings we often replaced watching television with sitting down in the kitchen together with my sister and our grandparents, learning new melodies from them and improvising second, third voices.

Every village in Moravia where I grew up had its own tunes and folk poetry and this art form is still present today at many feasts, weddings, funerals or just at ordinary visits to a wine cellar. (…) I think it is essential that folksongs remain an inseparable part of our cultural heritage and I hope you will be inspired by them and love them as much as I do.”

2023 NativeDSD Album of the Year – Opera

Verdi: Otello is a Double Album featuring the London Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Chorus and 9 Soloists including Simon O’Neill, Gerald Finley and Anne Schwanewilms conducted by Sir Colin Davis.  The performance was called “an electrifying account of a masterpiece, conducted with an explosive energy that belies Sir Colin’s eighty years and pushed the LSO to the top of its game.”

Verdi had retired from opera following the premiere of Aida in 1871 but was eventually persuaded by his publisher to work with the librettist Arrigo Boito. As with Falstaff, Verdi’s final opera on which they would subsequently collaborate, they turned to Shakespeare for inspiration. Otello, which was premiered in 1887, marked a significant evolutionary development in Italian opera and is widely regarded as one of the great operatic masterpieces.

2023 NativeDSD Album of the Year – Jazz Solo Instrumental

Autumn Rain In A Secret Garden from Double Bass player Csaba Pengo is a Pure DSD 256 album. It is exclusively available at NativeDSD in its original recorded format of Pure DSD 256 Stereo, as well as Pure Stereo DSD 512, DSD 128, and DSD 64. It is Not available on SACD.

It is a very difficult task to prepare for a recording that requires so much energy and attention. As this is not the usual recording with a thousand cuts and replays but follows the classical recording method (rehearsing at home, recording in the studio), it requires a very high level of preparation from the performer. Since it is a solo performance, the situation is made even more difficult by the fact that there is no other instrument to rely on, even if only for a short time.

You can hear every little noise from the bass, so the whole piece must be played with the utmost attention, and if that attention is distracted for as little as a moment, you need to start the recording again. In this case, two and a half studio days were allotted for the twelve pieces, which proved sufficient time for the recording. Some compositions were recorded on the second time, some on the fifth, and some on the first. It was a great help that my friend, László Gazdag, who also made my first album, gave me maximum support during the studio work, for which I am really grateful to him.

I knew that the “stimulus rich” home environment would make it very difficult to prepare for the studio session. I would have been able to practice only as a sideline to the daily chores at home, and directing my thoughts in one direction would not have been effective. So, I rented a small cottage in the countryside, in a lovely little village called Tiszasas. Here, in the undisturbed, quiet countryside, I could really concentrate on the music. I systematically went through the songs. I picked one, recorded it, listened back, corrected it, and then checked it again after replaying it. This is a very tedious, labor intensive and attention- demanding process of practice but in this environment, it became a focused and passionate creative process.

2023 NativeDSD Album of the Year – Jazz Trio

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the classic album Synchronicity by The Police, the Hazelrigg Brothers have brought an inspired arrangement of a classic work to NativeDSD.

This recording is an audiophile experience full of the fire, power and dynamics that have become the Hazelrigg Brothers trademark. Perfectly expressing the political and social temper of the early 1980s, the original landmark album was the near-constant soundtrack to George and Geoff’s upbringing and a huge influence on their artistic future.

The Hazelrigg Brothers Band consists of George Hazelrigg on piano, Geoff Hazelrigg on bass and John O’Reilly Jr. on drums. They are an instrumental trio that melds elements of Jazz, Rock and Classical to create an audiophile experience that is engaging, entertaining and eminently listenable. Critically acclaimed for both their performance and their unique recording techniques, Hazelrigg Brothers is a genre defying group that is not to be underestimated.

The album was recorded in one room using two Stereo microphones, captured in Stereo DSD 128. It is available at NativeDSD in both the recorded format and bit rate of Stereo DSD 128 and in Stereo WAV 96k for your convenience.

As a bonus, the track “Murder By Numbers” will be available only as Stereo DSD and Stereo WAV downloads and on Stereo CD. This track will not be available on the Vinyl LP edition of the album.

This is our first release from Outer Marker Records and we are very excited to be working with this exciting label! View the Outer Marker Records label page to find out more about them.

2023 NativeDSD Album of the Year – Jazz Fusion

File Under Zawinul by The Syndicate features the Music of Weather Report and its leader Joe Zawinul. Joe Zawinul was best known as the leader and co-founder of the legendary Jazz Fusion group Weather Report. He was one of the most legendary, visionary and influential musicians and bandleaders that Jazz Fusion ever produced.

Joe Zawinul’s passing in 2007 left a big hole in the Jazz world. If anybody could fill the gap, it would be The Syndicate – the 8 member Jazz Fusion band that he chose as the vehicle for his innovative and genre-busting musical styles, after the breakup of the Weather Report in the mid 1980s.

Joe Zawinul had a true midas touch in picking his band members. Not only picked because of their virtuoso instrumental skills, but with a special ear for how, ultimately, each musician would contribute to the whole that was totally unique in Joe Zawinul’s vision.

The Syndicate decided to keep the band together and continue and expand on the vision that Joe Zawinul laid out. In 2012, Joe Zawinul would have celebrated his 80th birthday. On this occasion The Syndicate recorded an album at the SuperSize Recording Studio in Budapest, Hungary.

All the music on the album is composed by Joe Zawinul.  The songs bring back memories of his work in Weather Report and in the world of Jazz Fusion. We invite you to relive these wonderful moments of music history with this album.
